Device drivers

George

I have a Toshiba satellite pro m30 about 8 years old. I have been
having a lot of problems with drivers, many of which seem out of date.
I went to several sites where they were advertising free download of
drivers, but found at the end they were not at all free. One wanted
£59 to update all my drivers, 14 of which they said were critical
requirements. I had to go to a lot of bother to download their
software before I was told the prices.

I cannot get high resolution on my lcd screen, is this a driver
problem too?

Not believing everything I am told I wonder if driver updates are
available really free anywhere. Thanks for any advice.

Regards George.

You must use the drivers that match the hardware on your system. There are
three ways to get them:
- From the drivers disk that you may have received when you bought the
machine.
- From the Toshiba site.
- From the factory restore CD that may have been included with your laptop.
Note that a "factory restore" may wipe your existing system.

I'm constantly bemused by peoples who have a large OEM PC, eg Tosh, who
never think to visit that manufacturers site to see what help is avilable

These "pay" sites are bogus. They just gather the "free" updates
available directly from the manufacturers web sites and then "charge"
you for their work. Most of the time, they only find the first
version of a "common" driver and not the ones especially tweaked for
your hardware.

Also, it has been posted that some of these sites can also place
"spyware" in their driver updater.

You do not have to pay for drivers. A 14 out of date drivers reports
sound about right for those bogus sites. Do not use them or pay for
anything like drivers - ever!

If you are having a resolution problem, it is easy to check the
drivers you have and download updates if needed, but you need to
supply more information. The best place to get drivers is from the
manufacturers WWW site - they have the latest, not some other site.

What do you mean you cannot get high resolution on your LCD screen?

Do you see a high resolution button somewhere? In display properties,
there is less and more resolution slider, but no low of high.

What is it set to now and what do you want it to be?

Where are you trying to change it, what are the options you want that
don't work, has it ever worked, why do you think you need to change
it?

We will know a lot about your system and be able to offer help after
you do this:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste
the information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name), and whatever appears to
be private information to you, just delete from the pasted
information.

This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork and
assumptions.

If the system is very old and no longer supported, a graphics card
driver that would support the higher resolutions may have never been
written. But if a newer driver was created, you might find it here:

There are some Satellite M30 listed under Satellite, but not under
"Satellite Pro". You also need a further descriptor; there are drivers
available for these models:

M30-S309, M30-S3091, M30-S350, and M30-S3501. There's also quite a few
M30X models to choose from.

Go to http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp then
click Download on the bar atop the page. Once you navigate to the right
page, there are many driver downloads available for the listed models.
