I've been experiencing this same problem for a couple
months now, and need any information possible. I run on
Windows XP, AMD Athlon(tm)XP 2200+ processor. I have 4
USB ports. 2 of which are in working order, and 2 are
not. The 2 that are not working are the USB ports I need
to use my EZ Cam Web Cam. Here's the info:

USB controllers:

USB 2.0 Root Hub Device (working)
VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller (working)
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller (not
working)
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller (not
working)

VIA Rev 5 (etc) Manufacturer: VIA Technologies

When trying to reinstall, or update new drivers:

(Reinstall) -Windows cannot load the device driver for
this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing.
(Code 39)

(Update) - Cannot Continue the Hardware Update Wizard -
The wizard could not find a better match for your
hardware than the software you currently have installed

Does anyone know what I should do? Any help would be
appreciated...

You probably need to install the latest VIA Motherboard drivers
from the motherboard CD supplied with PC or from VIA's web site.

Help I am having the same problem as Jen, on my Iwill DVD266u-RN
motherboard. I have the latest VIA drivers for this board it is the
same drivers that's on the motherboard CD as the ones offered at the
motherboard's website. My USB controller was working fine until I got
my new OptoRite DVD±RW drive today and installed it after uninstalling
my old external Backpack CD-RW drive. Now I check Device Manager and I
see three explanation marks on my USB devices. Code 39.

I solved my problem. As stupid as this may seem, when I removed my
Backpack CD-RW drive and uninstalled the driver. The driver I
unstalled called 'Backpack finder' (pnp405a.exe) took the USB Root Hub
with it during uninstalled, and the USB Printing support (cause I also
have a printer attached to USB). That had left me with just the three
'VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller' with explanation
marks in the device manager after uinstallation. Despite trying the
Driver update or uinstall driver option for the three controllers or
even disabling/renabling the controller from the BIOS, nothing would
get it to work, until I installed the pnp405a.exe 'Backpack finder'
now the explantion marks are gone, and I get the device 'ding' letting
me know it found the USB Host and the printer is attached.
