device driver updates

I would like to update my device drivers and have done driver scans from
several sites but they all want me to pay to download the correct drivers
through their site. I know that I can use the information I got from them on
which updates I need, etc. and then go to other driver sites to download the
specific ones I need but, since I'm a big fan of freeware, I'd like to find a
freeware site that would scan my drivers and then point me to the specific
downloads I need. Anyone know of such a site?

Unless your computer is very old and you need to search for archived
drivers, there is no reason to go to third-party sites and there is
never any reason to pay for drivers. Please see the general drivers
information below:

The First Law of Driver Updates is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Normally if everything is working you want to leave things as they are.
The exception is that heavy-duty gamers will usually want to update
their video and sound drivers to squeeze every last bit of performance
out of the hardware to get the fastest frame rates. If you're not one of
those people, you don't need to update your drivers if there are no
problems you are trying to solve.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

why not just go to the manufacturers web site and download the drivers you need.

using 3rd party sites to do this for you can only result in problems.

For what it's worth, I like your sig and your advice not to get
computer repair done by the big stores, geek squad type people.
I'd venture to guess your business is nowhere near 99.9% of the
people reading and posting, and I appreciate that you mention
your business in your sig because I know *you* know what you're
talking about, since you're in the business of computer repair!
And you *always* give good advice.

Thank you for the very kind words. You understand exactly why I give the
link - so people can see that I do tech support for a living, who I am,
and take whatever information from the website they'd like. I don't get
business from newsgroups or my website (no ads, either) and don't expect
to. This is a local business and I get clients from word of mouth and my
ad in the Yellow Pages. But you can't reason with trolls so the only
thing to do is ignore them.

Thank you for posting here! Your advice and input, along with
that of many others here, is extremely valuable to me. I save
all the posts of interest to me, and I use them as my own archive
if I think I have a computer problem that has been addressed
here, or will have in the future.

So, all the thanks and gratitude go to you, and to the other
valuable contributors here. Because of you, I get the
opportunity to learn, by reading clear advice regarding all sorts
of computer problems in plain language, which is much more
user-friendly for me than trying to look up a problem in the
Microsoft database articles.
