How do I reinstall a device driver from my Windows XP CD? I'm having trouble
with a CD/DVD combo drive for a Dell Inspiron 1100, and I suspect a
corrupted driver on my Hard disk.

Thanks for your help,

Owkmann

XP has drivers included for optical drives..... You can go into the device
manager, right click and uninstall the optical drive and then reboot, XP
will reinstall the driver(s).

What problems are you experiencing with the drive?

I'm no fan of recent Dell products and so not uptodate.
I understand that Dell have in recent times instigated
a hardware policy of "propriatary hardware interface".
One example being the power supply - not being a
"standard fitment", therefore it results in not being
easily "upgraded" by the owner, but entails an awkward
process of "return to base" -where they have your PC/laptop,
perform the upgrade and charge their prices?
This issue may, or may not apply to your drive?

You may be best to try Dell's awkward drivers site:

This is "user forums", they maybe the best to advise you?

Cari,

This is a continuation of my problem with a DVD drive that I posted in the
thread "Starting movie causes blue screen". I did not buy the drive from
Dell, but from a third party. The third party insists that it's a software
error or a driver error, which corroborates your previous post of a device
driver problem. However, reinstalling the Windows driver doesn't solve the
problem, and a Google search for a Philips CDRW/DVD CDD5263 driver turns up
nothing, neither at the Dell web site or anywhere on the web (at least that
I could find). The third party also had suggested a firmware update, but
that also has turned up nothing on the web.

So I was thinking maybe the driver on my Hard disk has become corrupted, and
a fresh reinstall from CD might do the trick. That's why I asked the
question.

The drive can read CD's and data DVD disks just fine.

Bummer.

Let's see, I have one single optical device in this desktop which is a
Pioneer DVR-108. The installed drivers, according to the Device Manager are
as follows:

(all in C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS)

cdrom.sys
drvmcdb.sys
imapi.sys
pfc.sys
pwd_2k.sys
PxHelp20.sys
redbook.sys
storprop.sys

cdrom.sys
imapi.sys
redbook.sys
and
storprop.dll are all from SP2.

dvrmcdb.com is v 3.22.07a from Sonic Solutions
pfr.sys is v2.5.0.204 from Padus, Inc (????? no program called Padus on my
system!)
pwd_2k.sys is v8.0.5.39 from Sonic Solutions
PxHelp20.sys is v3.00.09a from Sonic Solutions

I don't have any system with just a CDRW/DVD combo on it, everything has at
least a DVD burner except my Windows 2003 Server which has a DVD-Rom
drive... The drivers on that machine are as follows:

cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, pfc.sys, PxHelp20.sys, redbook.sys and
storprop.dll....... again pfc.sys is from Padus and the PxHelp20.sys is from
Sonic Solutions... (I do have Roxio v8 installed on both machines, so I
presume it comes from that application), the other files are from the SP1
for Windows 2003.

I would suggest the best way forward might be to think about it from the
Service Pack angle. If you have not already installed SP2 (and why not???)
then do so. A reinstallation of SP2 might also work... and also if you use
Start, Run, (type) MSCONFIG (enter)... you can expand a single file (or in
this case four files) from the SP2 installation file. You may have to
download the single file of the SP2 in order to have the correct source...

You can download the single SP2 file which contains everything at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

Or if you think the download is too big, order the CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Which third party DVD decoding software are you using? Did you try
reinstalling that? I'm running WinDVD v7, but as above, there do not seem
to be any drivers from the application in the Properties of the Pioneer DVD
burner in Device Manager. I'm wondering if uninstalling the DVD decoder and
then reinstalling might do the trick. You can check which decoder(s) are
installed on your system by running the DVD Decoder Checkup utility found
at:

Cari,

Yup, reinstalling the DVD decoder did the trick (rather old decoder though -
WinDVD v4). Thanks for your help!
