I've been having a perplexing problem lately I can't figure out. The
symptoms started when my online game started hanging unexpectedly. All
other programs seemed to work fine. Only the game which taxed the video
resources.
Troubleshooting found TWO entries under Display Adapters when looking at the
Device Manager. One for Radeon 9700 Pro, and the other for Radeon 9700
Pro - Secondary! The problem I'm having is that, try as I may, I can't get
rid of the secondary driver. Windows seems to think there is a second video
card and installs the drivers for it each time I remove them.
Today, I picked up a spare video card. I removed the 9700 and booted up
with the spare card. I removed all of the ATI software that I could find (I
think - I bet there's something hidden somewhere!) I even took a chance and
searched the registry settings for Radeon and removed all references to
Radeon in the registry. Rebooted with the spare video card and everything
was still working fine. Put the 9700 back in and - yup, you guessed it - my
windows XP Pro system found the card and installed the drivers (from
somewhere; thought I deleted them!) AND installed that pesky secondary entry
also!
Any suggestions on what I should try next ?
Thanks...
