DEVICE DRIVER FOR WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION

Hi!

I'm totally illiterate when it comes to computers so if
anyone responds to my please for help....please write
back as if you are talking to the village idiot.

My computer keeps crashing all the time. The error
reports keep saying it's a DEVICE DRIVER - and although
I've clicked on to all the possible links in the message
I'm afraid I'm bamboozled.

I've done all the updates....but I need to download a new
driver - and I'm just going round and round in circles.

I think the word SMART or SMART DRIVE came up once...but
it clicks off all the time - and nine times out of ten,
in the middle of the error report!

I'm sorry I'm not up with the play...but I am trying to
learn, and would appreciate ANY help concerning this
driver problem.

Dear Village Idiot,

(Ok, I don't really think you're that, but I couldn't resist)

Before you do anything else, you need to address the SMART error. This is a
function that is telling you there is a problem with your hard drive. It may
be failing and require replacement. The driver errors may or may not be
related, but they will be inconsequential if the drive fails. What to do: Go
to the web site of your hard drive manufacturer. Download a drive diagnostic
utility (most provide these for free).

Follow the instructions to create the boot floppy, then boot your machine
and run the tests per their instructions. Be careful, as some of these tests
can erase the contents of the drive, only run those that do not. The rule of
thumb here is to read the accompanying text, then read it again before you
start. See what the test results are. If it recommends replacement, I
suggest you do not ignore this.

If you are uncomfortable with this level of diagnostics, bring it to a local
pc shop (not some office superstore, but a reliable local vendor who
specializes in pc repair).

Boy! A nutcase responding to an idiot's plea....the mind
boggles!!!

Rick, thank you very much. I have some understanding of
the problem now.

However, as soon as you said that some of the options
could erase things, I thought - take it to the repair
shop.

I'm thankful that you replied, and that, by the looks of
it the computer's staying on line long enough to post my
gratitude.
