Detecting if a Printer supports Collation

Can someone provide a definitive method for determining, programatically,
whether or not a printer supports collating on its own? I've found this
question asked but not answered many times and would appreciate any clear
answer.

Obviously MS products can do this. Word correctly determines whether it
needs to generate multiple collated copies itself or send a single copy to
the printer, based upon the capabilities of the selected printer. I need to
do the same.
