Detecting headphones on device

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone is familiar with a way to detect when the
user of the device has plugged their earbuds into the headphone jack.
Currently on the device with the sound near full volume the audio
from the speakers is just about right, however when plugging in the
earbuds the audio is incredibly loud. A programmatic way of
accomplishing this would be ideal so we can adjust the volume when
headphones are detected. I would also be open to alternative
solutions if anyone can think of any.

That would be a device-by-device thing, but I'd suspect that it's generally
not there. On a regular headphone jack, at any rate, it just mechanically
redirects the connection from the speaker input to the headphone input when
you plug it in. No software intervention or notification possible.

I think that the best you can do is turn down the control on the earbuds
themselves, if they have one (my Pocket PC phone earbuds have their own
volume control in-line).
