destination host unavailable

I am trying to set up a home network using a desktop
running W2K and a laptop running XP. I have had no trouble
setting up the laptop however pinging the host IP address
on the desktop I get a "Destination host unreachable"
message. Pinging the host name it reports that it has
pinged 127.0.0.1. Any ideas?
 
How are you getting IP addresses on this network? How are the two devices
connected? What IP addresses are both getting?
