Hello,

Have a 5 yr-old Dell Desktop with Windows XP Service Pack 2. It is
connected via wire to a wire less router that is my internet gateway. My
step-son has a new Toshiba laptop (Vista Home Premium) that is wireless
connected to this gateway. I want to share the printer that is connected to
my desktop with him. The Network Set-up Wizard does not seem to have drivers
for Vista. Is there something I can download or some other work-around?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi
The printer has to be set for sharing on the computer that it is connected
to.
You need to get the Vista compatible drivers of the printer from the
printer's manufacturer site.
Then use the wizard to add the printer and install the downloaded Printer
Drivers.
Jack (MVP-Networking).

Here is what I did to get this working. Initially, ran Network Wizard on XP
machine to set-up network. Then set up printer sharing on this machine.
Then went to Vista laptop, but could not see the XP machine (must use the
network map located next to glove on Network page). Learned that the XP
machine must have Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) installed. Downloaded
from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70582 (be sure to read knowlege
base file). Then I could set the XP machine, but not open it. I removed the
printer from the XP machine and connect to Vista machine and was able to load
driver on it. Then reconnected printer to XP machine. Went to
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx and learned alot
about how to get this to work. On the XP machine I changed the workgroup
name to WORKGROUP. Then on the Vista machine I enabled file and printer
sharing. I turned off the password protected sharing since Windows XP Home
uses simple file sharing. At the end of this article I learned about the
firewall network protocol control (I use Trend Micro). On both machines I
changed settings to match this article. After that I was able to see and
open the XP machine from the Vista machine. Finally, I went to network
settings for the Vista machine and added the XP printer.

Thanks for your help!
