An alert message on my desktop reads as follows:

'You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This copy of windows did
not pass genuine windows validation, ask for genuine microsoft software'.

As a result of this alert message, my desktop background/theme turned
all-dark. I have displayed other brighter background themes severally, but
they usually get wiped off, in a few minutes, by this all-dark theme and its
alert message.

Yet, I need to delete this black darkness with its alert message. Could
someone offer me directions on how to go about it? Please note that my
computer uses Windows XP Professional version.

That sound suspiciously like malware has attacked your system. Have you
run the various anti-virus/malware scans lately? Things like Spybot
Search & Destroy and AdAware may help.

I am fairly sure that Miscorosoft itself wouldn't display that type of
warning but, instead, would inform you after a run of their WGA (Windows
Genuine Advantage) tool.

Microsoft WGA will show an icon near the date/time in the Tasktray.
It would be a multi-colour 5 "point" star.

Ah. That's right. I just couldn't remember what it did. All my stuff
is legit. :)

This, I am sure, is malware.
