Hello ladyingrey

First I'd check that the Themes service is running. To do this:

1. Click on Start button, then Run.

2. In the box that appears, type "services.msc" (without the quotes)
then click OK.

3. In the Services window, look in the right-hand pane and scroll down
until you find the Themes Service. In the Status column it should say
"Started" and in the Startup Type column "Automatic". If that's what
yours says, please post back and let us know.

If either or both of these settings are wrong:

4. Double-click on the word Themes (or right-click and choose
Properties). A property sheet will appear. If the service isn't running,
start it by clicking the Start button under "Service Status" about
two-thirds of the way down. If it isn't set to Automatic, change this by
choosing Automatic from the drop-down box in the middle, next to Startup
Type.

When you've finished making changes, click the OK button at the bottom.

5. Close the Services window and re-start the computer.

I'm not sure what you mean about looking in Program Files for themes, as
the files are normally in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes. I might have
misunderstood you, though.

Please do let us know how you get on :)

Hi many thanks for the info, but sorry I got so frustrated that i did a
complete reinstall of windows xp and its all working fine. What I meant
about looking in prog files is that when i went to the themes file in prog
files it was empty. This all started when I tried to down load a new desktop
theme from internet, I will stick to windows supplied themes from now on.

Hi ladyingrey

I'm glad you've got it fixed, but re-installing XP was a bit of a
drastic solution -- I'm pretty sure it wasn't necessary. The XP Themes
aren't stored in Program Files; they're in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes.
Still, if you and your computer are happy, that's all that matters :)
