desktop suddenly has a sidebar

my desktop decided to have a mind of it's own and change
itself. the desktop now has a sidebar as if it were a
folder and it doesn't display any background pictures.
how can i get my desktop back to normal?

Matt,

Click Start, Run and type "regsvr32 /i shell32". Restart Windows.
