Hi,
The information here from Doug Knox a Microsoft MVP will tell you how to get
the Show Desktop icon/shortcut back on your Quick Launch toolbar.

Dear Gary -

Could you give me background on this? My next door neighbor is a "newbie". I
noticed that there are no icons on her XP desktop.

Is there supposed to be an icon on the quick launch menu to show/hide icons?
Does this icon disappear from the quick launch menu on its own accord?

Is the software linked here what she needs to get the desktop icons to display?

I am not an XP user so a little background info on what Microsoft is trying to
do with the desktop icons would help.

Thx. (Sorry for the e-mail ... just impatient I guess.)

Kent,

No, the purpose of the Show Desktop button on the Quick Launch bar is to
minimize all open windows with a single click of the mouse, so you can see
the Desktop. The utility reference by Gary only recreates the Show Desktop
icon, if its been deleted somehow.

For no icons on the Desktop, there are a couple of possible causes. The
most common one can be fixed by going to
www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 195, Restore Desktop Icons and
Taskbar.

The second cause, less likely, can be fixed by using Line 72, Left column,
Enable/Disable Desktop icons on the same site as above.

See the instructions at the top of the page for use of these files.

Hi Kent,

Right click on a blank area of the desktop, move cursor to Arrange
Icons By, Make sure there's a checkmark in front of Show Desktop Icons.

Thanks Chuck.....the missing icons are probably not due to program fault.....did
not know there was a show icons button. That is what I was looking for. thx
again.

Which icons are you referring to, Kent? In Windows XP, the the old
desktop icons ("My Computer," "My Documents," and so on) have been moved to
the "Start" menu and will not appear on the desktop unless XP has been
modified to do otherwise. You can use TweakUI (Powertoys for XP) to change
this behavior. If you're talking about other icons disappearing, then
consider some of the solutions already mentioned by others.

In the absence of the desktop shortcut, you can quickly access the same
feature by using Keyboard shortcut keys --- Windows + 'D' (press both the
windows key and 'D' key simultaneously). This minimizes all the windows and
shows the desktop. Pressing the same keys again, restores the windows to
their original state.

Hope this helps.
