Hi:

I'm looking for a nice desktop (as opposed to tray icon) menu where I can
quickly run my mosy used programs (i.e. MS Word, Email, etc).

Any help would be appreciated.
My system:

RUNit is a simple yet powerful launchpad. RUNit gives you quick access
to applications, documents, folders and shortcuts. Unlike many other
launchpads RUNit doesn't occupy any space on your screen - you only see
it when you actually use it.
RUNit defines a 'hot area' on your screen where a click of the right
mouse button makes the RUNit launch-menu appear. The hot area can be any
border of the screen or even the whole screen (you have to hold down the
CRTL or SHIFT key while right clicking in 'whole screen mode').

What for ?

Create a folder called "deskTopIcons" (or whatever)
Drag desired shortcuts into this folder
Right click the task bar and select 'toolbars' then 'new toolbar'
Direct it to the 'deskTopIcons' (or whatever) folder you just created.
You will then have created a new task bar within the existing one.
Drag the new one to the side or top of your desktop.
You can also drag any icons/shortcuts directly onto this new toolbar.
Use 'always on top' or 'autohide' as you would with the standard taskbar.
Voila - no additional software.

IINM, the Office Shortcut Bar only comes with the Office package, not
individual programs.

That said, if you right-click on the Windows taskbar, then select Toolbars
from the popup menu, then select New Toolbar, you can create a customized
toolbar that can contain any number if application icons you choose.

Check out WindowsPowerPro. Menuing is just one of many, many things this
program excels at. http://www.windowspowerpro.com

Direct download of latest version -

Using it on Win98 here, 32megs RAM, 333MHz AMD. Runs fine.

You simply MUST give Aqua Dock a try. It's the nicest Freeware launch bar I
have ever ran across. It holds 15-30 icons, depending on your screen
resolution.

If for some reason it doesn't float your boat, try Jet Tool Bar. It holds
over 100 icons, and has category tabs.

Both these launch bars can auto-hide, which is my preferred style. Both are
excellent.

Aquadock looks like the old ydock. Apple threatened it's developer and
forced him to close down his site for infringing on their software. They
haven't done that with the other mac clone taskbars like object dock for
some reason.

I run with NO icons on my desktop. All my frequently used programs are in my
Start Menu ABOVE the Program Files line. Easy to get to and I don't have to
find the desktop to launch a new program.

An additional place to have toolbars: It's the "Links" sub-folder within
the MSIE favorites folder. It works well for use from open instances of
the Explorer. I use it more that way, than from the browsers.

You can configure there drop-down program menus. I have usually about three
of them. Make recursive subfolders for the links in each one, to get an
organized, cascaded style.

Thank you for this tip. I have the taskbar on the left side of the
screen with auto-hide activated. I expand it to about one quarter of
the screen width. This tip allows me to have three sections of
shortcuts on the taskbar.
