I downloaded the Desktop Manager for xp, this is an
absoulutely mandatory feature for my desktop as I'm
normally a unix user running plnty of windows and used to
multiple desktops. The desktop manager is very buggy, you
cannot seriously mean this is production software!? when
changing views (from desktop1 to desktopx) the actual
changing is very slow, the windows get in different order
and very often they tend to just disappear! Catastrophy!
I've lost a s@#$load of work already!

If you need a bit of *help* xfree86's implementation is
rock stabile and lightning fast...

I have had a look at some 3rd part software aswell, there
are better alternatives but none that integrates with the
taskbar...

Thanks for any help fixing this, any thoughts or ideas on
other software that might work better//Dan

The main reason I can't stand unix is all the GUI can't have multiple desktops removed as a feature. MS win 3.1 desktop manager works fine on XP. Obviously it doesn't integrate with the taskbar (cos the TB hadn't been invented yet).

It's called topdesk and is in the Win 3.1 resource kit.

Topdesk from the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit can do this.
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles
and look for reskit.exe

To just install TopDesk
==================
Rename the file from reskit.exe to reskit.zip (you'll need file extensions turned on - see Help).

Open it and select dsk_wrk.zip and diskroot.zip and drag them onto the desktop.

Open dsk_wrk.zip and drag onto the desktop topdesk.ex$ and tophook.dl$. Close dsk_wrk.zip.

Open diskroot.zip and drag decomp.exe onto the desktop.

Chose Start menu - Run and drag decomp.exe into the Start - Run dialog, add a space at the end of the line (press End - then space), drag topdesk.ex$ into the Start - Run dialog, add a space again, then drag topdesk.ex$ into the box again, and instead of adding a space replace the last $ with a e (Press End, Backspace, E). Press OK in the dialog. The file topdesk.exe should have turned up on your desktop.

Repeat for tophook.dl$ (except replace final $ with an l (L) )

Copy tophook.dll and topdesk.exe to where you want to store them and put a shortcut from topdesk.exe in to your Start Menu's Startup folder.

Delete all other files.

The UNSUPPORTED powertoy, written by MS programers as a HOBBY, in their own time (though they actually tend toi write them in the weeks after the coding is finished while at work) is not a production level program.

Multiple desktops, being poor user design, isn't a feature of windows.

I have now tried Topdeck, good but I really want it to be
integrated with the task bar. Multiple desktops isn't bad
design, it's just a user preference! I use one desktop for
my mail client, msn and icq. another for misc browsing. 3rd
and 4th for actual work. What is bad design is that a user
don't have the option...

Have you tried the virtual desktop manager powertoy? Once installed, just right
click the taskbar and choose desktop manager and you'll have the multiple
desktop feature.

It's not hard to configure *any* unix GUI the way you want it.
Do you have a *real* reason you can't stand unix?
