Over weekend, Norton internet security alert prompts
showed trojan horse attempts stopped. One alert noted
location could not be found as on local network. I have:
26K dialup with msn as ISP; Windows XPhome version--ALL
critical updates installed; Dell/pentium 4; Norton 2003
Security and Antivirus--ALL updates installed.
Norton Speed Disk stopped working; cannot find 'scandisk'
on 'search files'; defrag can be located but will not
function; shutdown/restart always indicates 'program not
responding' with end now/cancel options. If and when
shutdown requires depressing power button on CPU, scandisk
no longer runs after reboot.
Internet still accessible at either 31.2 or 28.8, but
desktop programs snail speed.
Have deleted MANY rarely used progams, such as Money 2003
and others. Have done System Restore, but checkpoint date
option was only for yesterday, Sunday, November 16. Thus,
no change in performance problem.

Hi

Want happens if you uninstall NIS - do you get the same problems? NSD won't find 'scandisk' - XP uses 'chkdsk'. If NSD doesn't know the difference may I suggest that is a reason to uninstall all Norton products to see if your PC works properly. Another anomaly with Norton - defrag. That utility works perfectly well without Norton's interference.
