Desktop link icons

This is nothing more than annoying, really. When I click
& drag a website to my desktop, some of the pages show
their unique logos (i.e., Pogo, Gamesville), and others
do not (Capital One, CNN, Boxerjam). All of these pages
showed their custom logos at one point, but since I
downloaded some of the Windows Updates they don't seem to
work. It's rather aggravating (this same thing seems to
happen in the QuickLaunch bar, as well).

Is there a setting or something that I can change so that
these links will always use their custom icons? If there
is, I can't find it. Thanks.
 
Hi,

These are generally known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they normally
will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

This program will allow you to save the favicons.ico (Favorite Icons)
permanently in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the
stored icons.

Workaround:

Navigate to the Temporary Internet Files, and drag the icons to the desktop
and rename them to whatever name you like.

Create a folder called Icon Selection. Move all of the renamed favicons to
this folder placed in the root directory of C. Right click on the Icon,
select Browse and navigate to your Icon Selection folder. Choose the
renamed favicon and click ok. These icons will be permanent.

When you right click on an icon, select browse and navigate to the Icon
Selection folder. Choose the renamed favicon you want and click ok. Your
customized icons will be permanent.

But when I navigated to my TempIntFiles folder, there
were no icons for the programs in question, including
Yahoo, Boxerjam, Capital One, and Housecall.
Interestingly, the Capital One favicon (thanks for the
terminology tip, btw...now I don't feel like such a
dunce!) showed up earlier today but then when I restarted
it disappeared again. What's up with that? Thanks again.
Your answer makes sense, because I run SpyBot weekly and
after I've "fixed problems" my icons disappear (leaving
the generic webpage icon). I used to be able to click on
the link, open the page, and replace the old icon with
the new; but now this does not work.

It depends what your settings are. Do have the temp files set to be cleared
upon exit? Some users do. Other than that, you will need to run the third
party program or utilize the workaround while your proper icons are in
place.

Lastly, when all is set in place, run this edit. It only needs to be run
once.

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

No, I don't clear on exit...in fact, I manually clear
them. At this moment I'm running your restore program to
see if I can't find the original favicons in the temp int
files I've deleted, and then I'll do as you suggested
previously. The problem is, I can't seem to get the Yahoo
icon or the Boxerjam icon back on my desktop at all...but
if I ever do, I'll be sure to save them to a favicon
file. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem of not
being able to get them at all? (Even when I set a new
link by clicking and dragging the page, the icon does not
show up.)

The next time you run "SpyBot S&D", could you ensure that
you are not deleting your Internet Explorer Temp files
there.

Only items marked in red need to be "fixed". Items in
green are advisory only, for example, usage tracks.

Hi,

In IE, go to the sites in question. Once there, save each in Favorites and
choose yes to over write it. Close IE, re-open. The icon will have been
restored. Go to the sites in question again and choose, File/Send/Short cut
to Desktop.

previously. The problem is, I can't seem to get the Yahoo

file. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem of not
