Desktop Items missing

I managed to resolve the problem by going to display properties and checking
the icons but can anyone answer why this happens.

On several occasions I have built new computers and installed WIN XP pro
onto a clean harddrive (In otherwords level formatted sorry). Most of the
time the installation goes fine. Every now and then for no particular reason
XP pro installs without the desktop icons i.e my computer, my network
places, my documents and so on. The desktop is bare.

Now I have resolved it but there must be some valid reason why XP does this.
If you create new profiles they also come up with bare desktops.

Any ideas.

Hi,

the default settings of win xp is only the recycle bin
will appear on the desktop. to see all the other icons do
the following

right click on the desktop and choose properties
go to the desktop tab and click on the customize desktop.
now u will see that the four icons are unchecked. check
them and u will see the icons on the desktop.
