Two instances of desktop.ini have appeared on my desktop. What are
they for and can they be deleted? I've also seen thumbs.ini in other
folders. Same question. Thanks.

Control Panel>Folder Options>View tab
Check the box to not display hidden files.

Don't delete the desktop.ini files; just hide them.

Thanks, but what are those files for? Also, I WANT to show hidden
files. Is there some other way to just hide the *.ini files I come
across? One other thing, my Desktop has TWO desktop.ini files. Is
that correct?

For Windows use.

Two desktop.ini files is correct, on resides in "All Users" and one in
"YourUsername" folders under C:\Users\<loginname>\desktop .....

Should you move to Windows 7, you will find two desktop.ini files in places
such as Music because the folder displays the contents of both My Music and
the Music Library. A bit odd to see, but they are hidden system files.

It is good to unhide files and file extensions because when you keep as much
of a lookout as you can, malware has a tougher time - having to jump more
hurdles.
