I have noticed that a file 'desktop.ini' is in my 'startup' folder,
and wonder what it is and what it does and whether I can or should
remove it. It contains:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

Anyone?

Thanks

See if this article helps:

That article seems to pertain to a problem whereby notepad is
involved. I don't have that problem (yet anyway),

You can delete the Desktop.ini file safely from the startup folder. Since
you don't have any problems, however, you may want to leave it as is.

It's just a text file, so you can open it and see what it does in Noterpad
or any text editor. It sets up "specials" for the folder it's in, icons and
the like. Check it out.
You shouldn't delete it, and some won't let you delete them. No idea
what happens if you delete the wrong one; I've never done it.
