Lorne

I recently posted a problem that my shared music folder had the wrong icon
and was called "My Music" rather than "Shared Music".

This was solved by Ramesh who gave me the correct code to put in
desktop.ini, but I have now found every time I start media player it
overwrites the desktop.ini file with the following code:

[.ShellClassInfo]
FolderType=MusicAlbum
MusicBuyUrl=providerName=AMG&albumID=AB4CB91D-0C49-48BD-8D48-41E5B2220BD6&a_
id=R%20%20%20184137&album=What's%20Love%20Got%20to%20Do%20with%20It&artistID
=6F1691C5-9E13-42DB-A8D9-10B614837D25&p_id=P%20%20%20%20%205714&artist=Tina%
20Turner&locale=409&version=9.0.0.3075

and I am back to the problem of the wrong name & wrong icon.

How can I stop media player doing this? I posted this to the media player
new group but nobody replied to it.

I am using XP home + media player 9.

Thank you for the info - but why does your contractural obligation extend to
deleting the code needed to display the default behaviour on the folder?

Surely if some idiot out there is requiring you to annoy your customers &
add album info to the desktop.ini file you can add it to the end of the code
and leave the code for default setting alone rather than overwriting the
default settings entirely?

Are you able to pass this on to the media player software developers? Maybe
they can issue a fix so this rogue code is added to desktop.ini rather than
replacing it.

Also is it possible to set desktop.ini to read only? If so can you tell me
how I can see the file since it is invisible in explorer or the command
prompt even with show hidden files switched on and the only way I can get to
it is via file-open in a text editor and text editors I have can't reset
file attributes..

Regards, Lorne

I worked out how to display the desktop.ini file in explorer & then set its
attributes to read only. Unfortunatley media player seems able to remove
the read only tag and edit the thing. Is there a way to make the read only
tag permanent or protect it in some way?

Lorne,

You may try setting File permissions for that. Give yourself Read rights for that file. Not tried it myself. Hope it should work.

I think I got this to work now - one over on those content suppliers forcing
microsoft to do something stupid.

I set read + execute rights to everybody & disabled write rights to
everybody (including system). It now appears it can only be changed by
booting into safe mode & logging on as adminstrator!

Many thanks. Lorne
