Desktop in XP Pro SP2

I can't right click on my desktop. Every time I do, the DT freezes. I can't
arrange Icons and my taskbar is acting hinky too.

I picked up a trogan horse, but McAfee found it and took care of it (I
thought) before it got to my system. Since that time, I am having problems
with the DT.

I thought about formatting my C drive and re-loading XP Pro, but I would
prefer not to.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get my desktop back?

Thanks

make sure you have turned off system restore because viruses make
copies of themselves there and you won't be able to remove them from
the restore folders. So turn off restore and delete the folders
containing the restored files. Then run a virus scan. This has nothing
to do with McAfee or any other, with my respect to the others'
opinions. Always backup before you format.

Hi Chris, go through the Control Panel/Display and check things from that
side. In the meantime, run this combo:

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:

Note: Update the first two programs, once installed, before running.

I had the same problem but it is solved now. The problem is linked to the
security update MS06-015 and the file VERCLSID.EXE which was installed by
this update. I suggest one of the following two solutions:

Solution 1: Uninstall security update MS06-015.

Solution 2: If you have an Nvidia graphics card on your
computer, see if the computer also has Nview Destop context menu.
Get the "ShellEXView" utility from this link
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html .
Install it & run it to find out whether you have NView Desktop context menu.
If you do see it listed in ShellEXView, then "disable" it. Then see if your
problems stop. THIS HELPED AT LEAST IN MY CASE.

You can also try the HP's Fix in Kelly's corner:

Line 383 right hand side.
(But this didn't work on my computer)

Try first this:
When the freeze happens press Ctrl-Alt-Del and see if you have the
VERCLSID.EXE in the process list. Kill this process and the WinXP should work
again. But, when you right-click the desktop again the verclsid is back.
Follow my advice below and tell me if it works.

I've been following this HP problem for a while now but I thought you might
be interested in knowing it also affected my Dell 4800 Win XP2, NVidia
graphic card. I tracked the problem down to this VERCLSID.EXE and renamed
it to something else. It fixed the problem and didn't affect anything else.
