Each time I open my desktop a blank image approx. 1" wide and 6" long appears
in the right side of the desktop.
How can I remove this image?

It sounds like you've got a toolbar there. Try right-clicking anywhere
in the blank space and see if you get an option to "close toolbar". If
you do, then choose "yes".
