This may seem like a silly question but it is driving me
crazy that I can't figure this out. When I first
installed Windows XP I noticed that the titles under
desktop icons didn't have a any shading rather the letters
seemed to be right on the desktop as to where you could
see straight through to the wallpaper all around them.
Somehow I changed a setting and now there is shading
around the letters in the titles of the desktop icons. I
have tried everything I can think of to restore that
original setting (I just like that way better) but nothing
is working. The only thing I am able to do is change the
color of the shading but I am unable to remove the
shading. Please help.

Start/Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings/ Visual Effects,
select to "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop".

Thanks Ronnie... I tried the steps as you indicated. It
didn't remove that shading however. Do I need to restart
the computer or something for the changes to take effect?

Start/Control
Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings/ Visual
Effects,

Right click the Desktop, select Properties, Desktop, Customize Desktop, Web
tab. Uncheck any web content items. The repeat Ronnie's instructions if
necessary.

Whenever I reboot or right click on my desktop and hit refresh my
desktop icons resort back into whatever order I had lasted specified
by right clicking on my desktop and hitting Arrange Icons By
(Name/Size/Type/Modified). This occurs no matter how many times I
setup a particular order manually. The same thing also occurs somewhat
randomly whenever XP decides it ought to do a "refresh" for me.

I've tried checking and unchecking Auto Arrange, Align to Grid and
Lock Web Items on Desktop.

I've tried the following from
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

2. Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000
121. Increase Icon Cache

I've renamed c:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application
Data\IconCache.db to .old and gotten it rebuilt.

Nothing has changed the behavior.

All this started about 2 weeks ago when I updated my video driver.
I've had this happen in the past, but it generally clears it self up
in several days. No such luck this time.

What else should I try?

Thanks,

Bob

I've found many examples of other users posting a question that looked
like this in various windows forums. None were ever answered.

Is there additional information that I should gather to make diagnosis
possible?

Is there a better place where I might post this question?

Although I can get the icons back to the order I want with a utility,
I use wintidy, it is a bit of a pain.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob
