desktop icons

I have tried to "fix" my icons in a specific sequence based on which ones I use most frequently. XP
repositions them when turning the PC off-on.

For example, I place the internet connection icon and Word Perfect icon near the bottom of the
screen because they are used frequently. I tried Auto Arrange, Modified, etc. checked and
un-checked. Obviously, I don't know what I am doing or how to get those icons to stay in the
position that I place them. Can someone tutor me on how to get the icons to remain in the location
that I place them and remain there for every time the machine is turned of then on? I don't enjoy
looking all over the screen trying to find the icon that I want.

Thank you,
Jim Y

1) Position the icons where you want them.
2) Right-click the mouse in an open area of the desktop
and click on "Arrange Icons By" and click
the "AutoArrange" switch (It's OK if Align To Grid is also
on).

They may move a bit after you do this, if so, you can drag
any icon except the one on the lowest-right side away from
the others and drop it on the right. All the others will
move up one position and the one you dragged will go to
the lowest-right position.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck !

Suggestion: Drop the shortcuts for the items that you use everyday into the
Quick Launch toolbar. If you like, you can leave the QL small and it it
will pop up the items that can't be seen. Or you can unlock the taskbar and
resize the toolbar so that all shortcuts are visible at once.

Or, add the Desktop toolbar to the taskbar and minimize it. then when you
click on the >>, the Desktop Icons will appear as a menu.

Right click desktop --select arrange Icons---put check mark on 'arrange to
grid' and 'show desktop icons' ONLY.

Easiest fix is to right-click a blank area on Desktop and in resulting menu,
go to "Arrange Icons by>Auto Arrange to unmark that if it is checkmarked.

That was one of the first things that I tried and it did NOT work - checked or un-checked.
Thanks for the comment,

I had three columns of 9 icons each on the desktop when I tried to get them to stay in the sequence
that I wanted. Arrange to Grid and Show Desktop Icons were checked. The icons changed position on
me when shutting down and re-starting the PC. I tried unchecked and they moved to another position.

Since then, I have removed eleven of the icons. I now have 16 icons in less than two columns. They
do remain in the sequence that I placed them.

Although I have the icons where I want them, I still want to know how/why they re-position
themselves. In the future, I may want more icons on my desktop and the problem may return.

Thank you,
Jim Y

When you have 'arrange to grid' set there is a maximum number of positions
available both vertically and horizontally. Each grid position has a definate
number of pixels. If you have too many icons vertically for example the
program that aligns them to the grid has no choice but to move them. If you
don't want them moved, do not use arrange to grid.

I'll remember that .
Thank you,
Jim Y

You're welcome. Arranging to grid spaces the icons evenly. If you do not
arrange to grid, you can put the icons closer together thus, put more of them
vertically and horizontally.
