Is it possible to delete desktop icons in my kids' user
accounts without deleting them from my user account
also? I want them to have access to some but not all
programs.

you can delete the icons by right clicking on them and
choosing delete but that just removes the shortcut. they
will still be accessable in the programs menu.
good for little kids who don't go exploring in the account.

When I did this it also deleted them from my desktop. I
wanted their desktops to only show the programs that they
use. So, for example, when I deleted the shortcut for the
antivirus software, it also deleted it from mine.

When you delete a shortcut from the desktop or the start menu - and - it
disappears from all accounts, that means the shortcut was in the All Users
folders.

Anything in the All Users' folders will appear for everyone.

For items that you want on the desktop/start menu for a particular account,
work with those folders under Documents and Settings.

For your items:
Documents and Settings\<you>\Start Menu
Documents and Settings\<you>\Desktop

For the kids:
Documents and Settings\<kids>\..

For all:
Documents and Settings\AllUsers\..

Thanks, Sharon. After looking around some more, I
thought this was where I needed to be.

You're welcome, Susan. The multi-user environment can be a bit confusing at
first but is extremely customizable and convenient once you get the hang of
it. Best of luck with this,
