Desktop icons

I have been working with windows XP for sometime now and
i still cannot understand why i cannot right-click on my
desktop icons. I can double click and open them but if i
wanted to right click and delete them or see their
properties, my cursor turns into the 'working in
background' or 'system busy' cursor and then i must
restart. Is there any reason for this? what can i do?
any help would be much appreciated.

i've already downloaded the service pack when it was
released. still no change since.

I have the exact same issue. I cannot right click on the desktop in XP
I just recently upgraded from ME to XP and this issue is very annoying
I tried the enable right click that didn't work. I also tried th
service pack 2, no luck. Any help would be extremely appreciated
