When I download a new web site and have it's icon applied to my desktop, it
most of the time has an image related to the site. However, when I restart
my computer many of these icon images change to the MS "E" image. The icon
still contects to the right site, but the desktop image has changed. How
can I get the orginal icon images to stick.

You need third party software to do this. You might try using Google to
find such an application. There are several shareware and freeware apps
that can give you what you want.

Not sure why it would do that but you can right click on the desktop shortcut and then click properties and on the shortcut tab you will see a "change icon" button. Click that and a list should appear or you may have to browse to where the icon is stored. Good luck

Windows always changes the icon for Internet shortcuts. The shortcut will
initially remain as it was created but upon rebooting, Windows will change
it to the default Windows icon for such shortcuts. This has been the case
going back to Windows 95.

Assuming she can find the original icon, your idea may work but it will
likely revert the next time she reboots as that is the nature of icons for
Internet shortcuts in Windows and requires third party software to defeat.

Go to the following link and scroll down to FavOrg. It works for IE
favorites and, *I think*' desktop as well.

HTH, JAX

Jax, you didn't post the link. Also, if this is a link to PC Mag, they have
to pay a subscription fee to download from that site, at least that used to
be the case and they will run into that from any site that links back to PC
Mag for the download.

These are known as Favicons. They're stored in your Temporary Internet Files, and when its flushed from the cache, its gone, so there is no way for the shell to reference it. The same happens if you have your Internet Options set to clear the TIF when you close the browser.

Favorite Icons are Missing

Custom icons are lost when you clean your cache. These are known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they
normally will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

This program will allow you to save the favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) permanently in a different folder and re-associate
your favorites with the stored icons.

Workaround:

Create a folder called Icon Selection. Move all of the renamed favicons to this folder placed in the root directory of
C. Right click on the Icon, select Browse and navigate to your Icon Selection folder. Choose the renamed favicon and
click ok. These icons will be permanent.

When you right click on an icon, select browse and navigate to the Icon Selection folder. Choose the renamed favicon
you want and click ok. Your customized icons will be permanent.
