When I first installed Vista on a lesser machine I didn't have Aero. I
thought that the desktop icons looked pretty good until moving the mouse
pointer over them when the background light coloured shape appeared. I
figured this was what they looked like if I didn't have Aero. But they
still look the same running Vista on a beefier machine.

Does anyone think they look good? And if you don't do you know anything
that can be done about them?

Well I have seen that if I choose the "Windows Classic" theme under
themes then I don't get the mouseover effect that I don't like so there
must be a way to adjust icons somewhere. But I can't see where it might
be from "personalize".

You can change the size of the desktop icons by holding Ctrl and using your
mouse wheel, but that doesn't get rid of the opaque, white background on
mouse over. I don't know if there is a way to do that. I just hide those
icons anyway.

That is the kind of compromise I'm using... hide the desktop icons but
add the desktop toolbar to the taskbar. It works okay and I might even
get used to it.

I am getting to like the search thing on the Start Menu very much. I miss
it when I am actually working in XP!

Yes they look fine. What's wrong with them? They scale well too (in
most cases) if you want to adjust the size.

Have to agree. I hate those little backgrounds too. It also does the same
thing when dragging items in explorer and make it harder to see where youre
dragging stuff to.
