Desktop icons

On the desktop I used to have the colorful desktop items such as word and
excel, now I do not know what changed all i have is the white boxes with the
blue task bar like
Any help would be apreciated

To clear and reset icon cache:
Right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Advanced. Now using the item drop down
box, choose Icon. Change the pixel number by one. OK all the way out.

or download Tweak UI
Make sure you download the correct one for your system.

I tried both options but nothing changes. Am i doing something wrong?

Perhaps you need to increase the icon cache size -

Increase Icon Cache (Line 121)

Add Icon Cache Size to Folder Options/View (Line 166)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Also, do you regularly check for spyware viruses etc

Maybe I am not doing this right after I go to
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and I download to the file, a
message comes up and ithis file gets stored in the temp. folders....Now is
there anything I do from there?

Yes I do have virusscan,firewall and spamkiller that runs regurlarly
