Whenever I create a shortcut on my desktop to a web site
the icon supplied by the web site changes to a
standard "E" icon. For example MSNBC has a NBC "peacock"
icon but my computer changed it to the "E" icon from
windows. How can I change it back and prevent this in the
future? Does this have anything to do with Internet
explorer? The same thing happens with I save the site to
my favorites.

Same cause. The icons are stored in your Windows root folder, in the
folders under "Temporary Intenet Files"

Since these folders serve as a cache for IE, you can increase the size
by going to the "Tools" menu, selecting "Internet Options," then to
the "General" tab and clicking on "Settings" (in the Temporary
Internet Files section).

This will only delay their disappearance, not prevent. To prevent the
icons from disappearing, or to change to a custom icon:

1- copy the .ico files from your "Temporary Internet Files" folders to
a different folder outside of the "Temporary Internet Files" folders.

2- in IE, right-click on a favorites icon, choose Properties, and
under the Web Document tab, click Change Icon. You can then Browse to
find the icon in the folder where you copied.

- return address is altered slightly to reduce spam.
