Desktop Icons & Performance

I'm being told that Desktop Icons can slow down system
performance.

I always thought that the Desktop acted like like a
folder, and the Icons were like files in the folder.

I do know that system performance can be affected by the
taskbar, as those programs are running in the background.
But I don't believe that Icons on the Desktop can affect
system performance, as they are not running?

Any assistance & clarification will be greatly
appreciated. Thank you......marc

LOL - you were told wrong.

Your right !
But icons on the desktop means programs on the hard drive .
The more programs means more files to look through which means slower computer.
