desktop icons missing

All of a sudden, a few of my desktop icons are missing
(the name is there, the icon is missing) and a few of
them have the lower right 1/4 blacked out in a square
shape. The programs seem to open ok when I double-click
the icon (or where it should be). We had a 10 second
power loss yesterday. It seems to have happened after
that.????

Has this problem stayed through a reboot or power off and cold start? When
you right click on an empty area of the desktop and choose Refresh are the
icons still mucked up? Power drops, spikes and so on can kill delicate
components in your system. You may have sustained damage to the video card
or some other part on the motherboard, even the hard drive itself.
