I woke up this AM to my desktop icons missing. However, if I go to
documents & settings, under my user name & desktop they are there. Any
idea how to get them back? I can not even right click on my desktop to
refresh.

Thanks in advance for assistance.

Have you tried right clicking on the desktop and then choosing arrange icons?
There is an option to show, or not show desktop icons there.

FYI... you were right. I did that and went through the start up in
msconfig and took out everything that didn't look familiar... ta-da...
back in business. Not sure exactly what it finally ended up being, but
a little more detailed searching found the issue.
