Desktop icons keep renaming themselves

I don't understand this! I have renamed the basic desktop
icons (eg. "My Network Places" to "Network") and they've
stayed that way for months, but recently my PC has taken
it on itself to restore the original names every time it's
started. I can't think of anything I've done to set this
and nor can I find any articles about this in the
knowledgebase.
Any suggestions will be very gratefully received.

I think my problem might be related to yours: I've not changed the names,
but the icon images of these icons. But they kept getting reset to the
windows default look, and I recently discovered that that happened every
time a scheduled backup was performed (through Scheduled Tasks).

If this is the case with you, please let me know! If not, it may be you need
to disable the NVIDIA helper service.

Hello dOinK,

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
I don't have any scheduled tasks, other than Norton
SystemWorks - these have been in place long before the
mystery renaming started.
I then followed your suggestion to disable the NVIDIA
helper service - all I could find under MSCONFIG was
NVIDIA Display Driver Service (is that what you disabled?)
Anyway, I disabled it, restarted the PC and the icon names
remained as I changed them. To prove the point, I
restarted again and their changed names remained intact.
I then enabled the NVIDIA Display Driver Service and
restarted, only to find the icon names now restored to the
original - so it seems you're absolutely right!
What I don't understand is why it's suddenly decided to
take a dislike to me customisisng my desktop - I run the
Windows Updates on a weekly basis and haven't seen an
NVIDIA update for months.
That's one to ponder. Thanks again dOinK!

Hi Pater,

Others and I have the same problem! See my old "Losing "Customize
