Desktop Icons appear to have a "shadow' effect

The lettering and underline of each desktop Icon looks to have a shadow
effect.

Anyone assist these old drybones in removing this effect?

You can control the eye candy by doing two things (see below). The
shadow effect will be found at the second location. FYI, I always turn
off everything except "show window contents while dragging", "smooth
screen fonts", and "use drop shadows..". Even on a fast machine you
will be amazed at the speed increase.

1. Go to the Control Panel Display applet. Under Appearance>Effects
disable the first choice for effects. If you have an LCD monitor,
enabling Clear Type at the second choice is nice.

2. Still in Control Panel, open the System applet and click on
Advanced>Settings (top choice). You'll see lots of places to
disable/enable effects.
