Desktop - icons and taskbar have vanished.

I left my computer running for a few minutes. When I returned, the programme
I was working on had vanished and there was the desktop with no icons or
taskbar. I have rebooted twice and the same thing happens. I cannot access
any programmes. Any suggestions would be most gratefully received. Although
most work is saved to an external drive the current work is not and I don't
want to lose it if I can help it. The same thing happened some time ago on my
laptop but unfortunately I cannot remember how I rectified it.

PANIC OVER. NO NEED TO REPLY UNLESS SOMEONE CAN THINK OF A REASON FOR THIS
TO HAPPEN. I WAS DIRECTED A TINY RESET BUTTON ON THE COMPUTER. I PRESSED
THIS, THE COMPUTER REBOOTED AND ALL IS BACK TO NORMAL. THANK YOU. ERIC HARDY
