Where I used to work (I believe they used Win 2000) there
was a button on the bottom of the page next to START that
would take you immediately to your desktop. Does anyone
know how to do this with XP?

Right-click the Taskbar > Toolbars: make sure that "QuickLaunch" is
enabled here. This toolbar should contain the icon that you are after.

Jana ...
Go to Control Panel and select 'Taskbar and Start Menu'. Place a checkmark
in 'Show Quick Launch'. You may have to unlock the Taskbar and slide the
little right-hand dotted vertical bar to the right to see all the icons, but
'Show Desktop' will be one of them.
If you've done that and the 'Show Desktop' is not one of the icons, that's a
separate issue, so post back ..

You need to enable the Quick Launch toolbar.
Right click on the taskbar>Toolbars.
Check Quick Launch is enabled.

If the Show Desktop shortcut is not showing on the Quick Launch toolbar then
you need to find it...
Search for 'Show Desktop.scf' and copy it to the Quick Launch toolbar's
folder which should be located at

C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch

You should now have the Quick Launch toolbar and Show Desktop shortcut as
you want.

Martin.
