Desktop Icon On Taskbar

I am new to Windows XP ( have had 95,98 & ME) & am trying to figure out how
to set up a taskbar icon(next to the start button) that will bring me back
to the desktop without having to minimize a bunch of windows. Can this be
done in XP?
