Hey I've currently customized my desktop icon names (via
F2, the registry keys, vb6 runtimes, every way possible)
and every time i do it, they revert to the names assigned
by windows when i restart/logoff, etc. I can't figure
this out! I have nothing installed -that i know of- that
would alter their names, either! It's crazy-annoying! If
anyone has anything that could help, please email me at
adamrichman_at_cox.net.
Thanks in advance - much appreciated!!

try.............
r-click icon
-properties
-general tab
-top box
-change name
-click apply
-click ok
.....no guarantee this will work....

Adam--

Anonymous' suggestion seems to work fine--I tested it. The puzzle is why F2
or right clicking and hitting rename on the context menu won't "stick," but
I have another idea in case a little convoluted but...l

You can hold down the right click or anyother way you want to copy and drag
it on your desktop and click copy. Then make an icon folder and name it
whatever--Adam's Icons and see if saving it inside that folder will make the
name stick. You can also try this within windows explorer or drag the icon
into windows explorer and I bet it sticks. AFICT, anonymous' suggestion
works fine but I wish someone would answer the $64 question of why just a
simple rename won't stick on your machine. That--is odd to say the least.

Yea except when I tried that before it would do exactly
what it's been doing... not to mention that only covers
one of the 3 icons, so don't get so excited about
yourself.

Back to the problem at hand, when I do do it to the my
docs folder now, it does come with access denied. Now I
am the administrator and it is currently not being
accessed, so this could hint us toward the problem. Any
solutions?

Adam--

I was trying to help and it didn't include "getting excited about myself or
anything else" and if you would make *clear* what you want to do, I could
get it done as far as icons or renaming. I had to guess at what you want to
do, and showed you how to collect a couple thousand icons within XP or any
other Windows OS and save favicons in the bargain.

right-click to properties and rename in properties is

Somewhat convoluted doesn't = difficult, but thanks for your insightfule
comment.

Chad - I think I did what you suggest right, but to no
avail.

What else is there to try?

Could it have something to do with the possibility that
the icons may be set as read-only?

Also--- I noticed that the registry keys used to define
the default values of the icons are MISSING. I had to go
in and add them manually. I have the registry files saved
as a .reg right now if someone wants to take a look at
which ones they are exactly.

Thanks for all your help guys!

that doesn't work if you are renaming the my computer
icon, when you click properties it brings you to system
memu, i have been having same problem.

all my icons are in launch area because desktop
background is pictures of charlize theron and no icons on
desktop. no titles on icons.

Chad,

I wasn't referring to you-- I was referring to the user
who posted "right-click to properties and rename in
properties is difficult???? wow!!!!!!" as if it was
something small and simple when this is actually
something much more comlicated, he was just ignorant.

I apologize if you thought that was for you.

In any case, yes what did you need to know more? However
I change my desktop icon names, they revert to the system
defaults on logoff or restart.

here is the last suggestion:
leave the titles as is and LIVE WITH THEM.
try changing name of your automobile brand.
....a Ford is a Ford is a Ford....
