Desktop Icon Names Changed

All the names of the icons on the desktop changed to "(-X)". Where the X is,
is a number that is different for each desktop icon. Only the desktop icons
are effected. I've scanned for viruses/spyware/adware, and none found. PC
seems to be running fine. What would cause the icon names to change? What
is the fix, besides doing a rename on all the icons?

Well ,the first thing comes to my mind is virus, trojan, worm, etc.
etc.; could be lots of things.

You said you scanned with av/spw/adw, but ... with which ones, and was
each one updated prior to doing the scans, or are they old? A listing
and when last updated would help a lot.

Other than that, I've no idea what could cause that unless it's
something you installed or botched when you ran it. Do the shortcuts
(icons) still all work?

You need to provide some information to work with.
 
Twanyne, sorry for the delay in response back.

The PC had and still has McAfee Internet Security installed. Protection was
in place and current before Icon names changed, and is still active and
current. Although names changed, the shortcuts still worked. It is just a
mystery as to why the names changed. I have renamed the icons on the desktop
back to their original names. It just concerns me as to why they changed and
what if anything is wrong with the operating system or if indeed McAfee is
not seeing infection problems.
