for those of you who were struggling with the now-popular
resetting desktop icon names, try navigating to this key
in regedit:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\
MUICache]

and changing the data value of: "@C:\\WINNT\\system32
\\SHELL32.dll,-9216"="My Computer" (and related files) to
the desired names.

This is the ONLY thing that i've found to work on my
machine.

Best of luck everyone!

i dont seem to have this key the key i have is
c:\\windows\system32\\shelll32

is this the one i change?

He upgraded from NT4 so winnt is the default name for the Windows folder, in 2000 and XP Windows is the default name. But you can call it fred if you want.
