Desktop icon lettering

Is there a way to stop XP from changing the lettering beneath icons
from black to white-with-shadow as soon as I put a .bmp on the
desktop? It doesn`t seem to matter what size the picture is, whether
it fills the whole screen or is small and centred, as mine is. I work
with graphics and my desktop is a soft grey, so white lettering is not
very clear.

Also, can one _safely_ re-name all the "My" folders?

1/ Just change the desktop background color (yes, even if you don't see that
color but your wallpaper...) to a light color (Right-click on the desktop,
Properties item, then "desktop" tab), letters will revert to black.

2/ To remove the shadow, right-click on the "my computer" icon, then
"Properties", then "advanced" tab, and click on the "parameters" button on
the performance area. Here you'll find an option to remove the shadow.

3/ Yes, you can rename the "my" silly folders but you should better do a
search an replace in the registry with a tool like Registrar
(http://www.resplendence.com/), after that. Some keys use a "%systemRoot%"
variable instead of the hard path as "c:\windows", so do a search and
replace for these items too (but leave the variable !). If you don't do this
second search, you will see names reverting to the default ones early or
later.
Or you can set and apply a strategy to your profile (right-click on the "my
computer" icon, then "Manage").

Thanks for that, Michel. Your first suggestion was not really an
option, unfortunately, as my desktop colour is visible (the
`wallpaper` is, in fact, just a small picture in the middle of the
screen). However, after I had removed the shadow, the lettering had
changed back to black, although the desktop had defaulted to XP style
and I had to reset the appearance all over again (I prefer the Windows
Classic style with my own inoffensive colours!).

Regarding renaming the "my" folders, perhaps I will put up with them
for a while, as my computer is only a few weeks old and I would rather
not edit the Registry in case I make a mess of it and get told off by
my Computer Engineer! I did click "Manage" to try applying a strategy
to my profile, which was your alternative suggestion, but didn`t know
which option to chose! Could you tell me which one, please?

Sorry I can't retrieve the appropriate information... Pehaps did I made a
mistake here ?!
Overwhere using the search and replace function from Registrar is very easy.
You shoud be able to redirect what you want in less than 10 minutes. If you
are wrong you just will see defaults foder recreated sometimes, so you'll
know there is a "fault" somewhere ;-) Just do again a search in the
registry.

About the registry some variables must be understood : %systemRoot% (point
to the Windows folder), %UserProfile% (point to your profile folder), some
others very easy to understand yhat you will find in the serach result list
from registrar if you do a search about the string "\My documents"
