Desktop icon gone reinstalling IE8xp

I'm still missing my desktop icon after reinstalling IE8 after disabling
Norton 360 3.0. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I have access through an
icon that I created but it is only one window at a time, not true Explorer
icon. Norton rep opened "Explorer running with no add-ons" icon but that is
not acceptable solution because this disables all add-ons and interfers with
active X programs and is useless in opening most internet sites.

Unless you just gotta have an icon to click, press the Winkey + D. Doing it
again reinstates what was there.
