When I try to arrange my desktop Icons by Name, I do not
get a complete alphabetical arrangement.

First I get My Documents, My Computer, My Network and
Recycle Bin.

Then I get two separte A-Z arrangements instead of one A-
Z. What am I doing wrong?

Windows XP likes to keep those vital Icons in the same
area for easy access. Download PowerToys (TweakUI)
if you want to change them.

Download and install TweakUI:

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP (TweakUI)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

After installing, go to Start > Programs > PowerToys for Windows XP >
TweakUI.

Thanks for your tip but I think there is something else
going on here.

I installed TweakUI. I discarded the four Icons (My
Computer, My Documents, Recycle Bin and My Network) from
my desktop. That worked OK. Then I rearranged my
desktop Icons by Name.

I still get two A-Z listings. The first listing starts
with Adobe, Canon, Dictionary, etc and ends with Word.
These are all shortcuts to programs.

The second A-Z listing starts with Address Book,
Audacity, Calendar, etc and ends with TQSL. These too
are shortcuts to programs.

I don't understand why I am getting two lists and cannot
seem to change it, even with TweakUI.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The icons on the desktop come from three sources:

1) Items which are added via the desktop namespace. i.e. My Computer, My Documents, Recycle

2) Items from the All Users desktop folder: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

3) Items from the users desktop folder: i.e C:\Documents and Settings\Keith\Desktop

When you chose 'sort by name', these three groups are only sorted within themselves, not
collectively.
