I often VPN into our network and then establish a remote desktop connection
to my pc at work. This has worked fine for several months but recently it
stopped working and I am at a loss as to why. I suspect that I have a
problem with the Windows Firewall but I have made no changes to it. I have
tried turning off the firewall but still have no luck connecting. The
desktop has no issues connecting to the network or accessing local network
resources but I can not get the machine to respond to a ping (I have made
sure that the firewall is set to respond to ICMP requests on the advanced tab
in the firewall). I also have an exception set in the firewall for remote
desktop. I am at a loss as to how to fix this issue. I really want to avoid
reloading the operating system on this machine.

Have you or anyone else added anything like NAV worm protection or MS
OneCare Live or any other personal firewall software to the machine? Both
may block incoming RDP requests if not configured correctly, or so I am
told.

I presume the machine is listening on TCP Port 3389?

Can you connect to the machine over the work LAN from another local PC?

One other thing... I went back to some old threads and saw one that
concerned a Cisco VPN client causing issues with RDP. Any chance that may be
happening with you?

Those tools mentioned in your article were very helpful. There is something
blocking the port but I have no idea what it might be. The only firewall I
have installed is the Windows firewall. I run an antivirus software from
Symantec but it is just an antivirus package (10.x of Symantec Client
Security, corporate license).

I do have the Cisco VPN client loaded. I had it loaded when I initially set
up the remote desktop and it did not interfer. I have upgraded the version
during all this to see if there might be an issue. What post did you see
that referred to the client and RDP issues?

Is there a tool out there that can tell you if you have ports filtered and
point you to the software that is doing the filtering?

Thank you Al for the Cisco VPN client idea. I launched the client and found
that I had enabled options\stateful firewall (always on). When I cleared
this option the remote desktop connection began to work properly again.

Great...

Thanks for the feedback...
