Desktop hangs up on first startup

Hi All - WinME

I don't know if this might be a cause of the problem that just
started, but, I downloaded and installed the AVG free edition to try
in my testing for a new AV. I uninstalled my old AV so that there
would be no chance of conflict. However, after I installed the AVG, I
had to reboot, and the desktop just hung up with nothing but the
bottom toolbar showing (with the Start button). I waited some time,
then did a ctrl+alt+del and at the top of the box was Explorer (not
responding). This seemed odd, so I just click on End Task...nothing.
Then I clicked Shut Down...still nothing, so I finally had to shut it
down with the computer power button. When I turned it back on again,
I got the scan disk thingie, I let it do it't stuff, then the desktop
came up just fine. It did the same thing when I first turned the PC on
this morning. I uninstalled and reintalled the AVG and when I
rebooted, it hung and wouldn't reboot. I had to turn it off at the PC
and restart. Then it came up with the scan disk, etc. again.

I am just wondering if there is a connection between the installation
of the AVG and the problem, as it just started when I had to reboot
after installing the AVG program. Is this a known situation?

I would truly appreciate any suggestions or references on this
problem.

Best regards,
Jan :)

I'd guess probably more due to a incomplete/crappy uninstall of the
prior av.

You might try using RegSeeker (link at my web site) to help clean up
the registry after uninsatlling AVG. Then try to reinstall AVG. In
some cases, there are utilities supplied by the av vendors to help you
clean up the mess they leave.

What Art is trying to say is that you should try Invircible from NetZ
computing.

Further to what null said. If it is Norton AV then it is notorious for
leaving all kinds of junk in the registry that messes up installing another
AV applications. They do have a total remover somewhere on their site.

As for W.S. just ignore the idiot.

Boot Win Me into safe mode (hold down the ctrl key or tap the function 8 key
as soon as you power on your system). Open your control panel and choose
add/remove programs.
Remove AVG. Delete any folders or files left over after the operation
completes. Reboot to safe mode and try re-installing AVG. If that doesn't
work, junk it.

You can grep your registry for instances of Symantec with:
http://www.4dev.com/regc/
What you do with the findings is up to you.

Hi null!

Thank you for your time to reply, I appreciate it very much.

I am sorry that I did not mention before that my old AV was McAfee.
Yeah, I know it won't cut me no slack iwth ya'll, but hey..I should
get an Atta-Girl for not havin' Norton ;-))

Thank you for providing the information for your site, and I'll give
it a try and see if it helps.

I truly appreciate your time to help.

Hi YoKenny!

Thank you for your reply. No, I don't have Norton, ever and never. I
had the other dirty word, Big Mc <g>.

As for W.S., I make it a rule never to engage in a duel of wits with
the unarmed. Bad form, ya know. ;-))

Best regards,

Hi optikl!

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it.

I'll try your suggestion and see if it will help with the problem.
But, I don't think I will have to junk it, just maybe show it the
picture of my last PC when it refused to cooperate. Maybe it can
identify some of the pieces...I haven't a clue..;-))

Best regards,
Jan :)
