desktop gets too big

for some dumb reason whenever I switch to any resolution above 1024x768 the desktop gets to big for my monitor and I have to pan around with the mouse to see all of the desktop. could really use the help. I have an ATI RAGE fury pro and please note I have used much higher resolutions before

Some ATI cards will allow you to set a "virtual desktop", where screen
resolution is one thing, and desktop size is another. Go through your
settings and change it so screen resolution and desktop are the same.

and bruce, I guess I could leave the resolution. but I was used to the big high res and liked it far better than huge icons and whatnot.
