I downloaded a few "demo" games online, and now the desktop folder for it
will not delete. It keeps giving me a message that says "Cannot delete
.......: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs
that might be using the file and try again."

No one else is logged on, or using that game, I uninstalled. I also tried to
re-install it, then delete the icon, still no use, and I don't have any other
programs running while I'm trying to delete the icons.

I dont like a lot of icons on my desktop, which is why it is annoying me so
much.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Hi AK,

Startup your system in SAFE MODE by pressing F8 repeatedly
while your system is booting up after you've shut down your system

Once Windows loads, you should be able to delete the desktop folder.

Thank you for writing me Jimmy, but I shut the system down, and started it up
in safe-mode, and I still got the same message it can't delete it because
another user or program is using it.

Hi AKoligian,

If Safe Mode doesn't prevent the file from being in use.. you might
have an "appinit" or rootkit like activity caused by the file. I don't
want you to be alarmed though unless we actually find something.

Run a complete Virus scan on your system, afterward download and
run a MS Antispyware scan as well (www.microsoft.com/spyware).

Hi Jimmy,

this question might sound a bit silly: does safe mode prevent the
regular start up programs (anti virus, messengers, firewall etc) from
starting? Reason why I am asking is because I usually use Spybot to
tackle problems like this. It has got a function where you can disable
start up items without actually deleting them (you never know if it was
the right one) so I never used safe mode for this type of problem.

Hi Thomas,

Yes, Safe Mode will only load the most basic and neccessary
services and processes, making it an excellent troubleshooting tool.

There are different Safe Modes to choose from, explained here:
